What is the difference between a thermostatic shower system and a pressure balance shower system?
The main difference between a thermostatic shower system and a pressure balance shower system is how they control water temperature and respond to changes in water pressure.
A thermostatic shower system uses a thermostatic valve that automatically mixes hot and cold water to maintain a precise and constant temperature throughout the entire shower. If the water pressure changes in the home—such as when a toilet is flushed or another faucet is used—the thermostatic valve instantly adjusts the hot and cold water mix to keep the temperature stable. This provides a more comfortable and consistent shower experience.
In contrast, a pressure balance shower system maintains temperature by balancing the pressure between hot and cold water. If the pressure suddenly changes, the valve reduces the flow of one side to prevent a sudden temperature spike. While this helps prevent scalding, it may also cause a noticeable drop in water pressure during the shower.
Key differences between thermostatic and pressure balance shower systems
Temperature control
Thermostatic shower systems maintain an exact water temperature, while pressure balance systems only balance water pressure to prevent sudden temperature changes.
Shower comfort
Thermostatic shower systems provide more precise and stable temperature control, making them ideal for modern bathrooms and luxury shower designs.
Multiple shower functions
Thermostatic shower systems are better suited for showers with multiple features such as rainfall shower heads, handheld showers, and body jets, because they maintain consistent temperature even when several functions are used at the same time.
Water flow performance
Pressure balance valves may reduce water flow when pressure changes occur, while thermostatic valves typically maintain stronger and more consistent water performance.

Can I replace my existing shower valve with a new MAX Faucets shower valve?
In many cases, an existing shower valve can be replaced with a new valve, but compatibility depends on the plumbing configuration and installation type. Standard shower valves are usually installed inside the wall, so replacing them may require access to the plumbing behind the shower. If you are upgrading your shower system, it is recommended to consult a plumber to ensure the new valve is compatible with your existing plumbing.
After turning off my shower, water continues to drip from the shower head for a short time. Is this normal?
Yes, it is normal for water to drip from the shower head for a short period after the shower is turned off. This happens because water remains inside the shower head and vertical pipe and slowly drains out due to gravity. In most cases, this is not a sign of a leak or valve problem.
What is a vertical shower system?
A vertical shower system, sometimes called a shower panel or shower tower, is a shower system that includes multiple water outlets arranged vertically on a single panel. These systems may include a rainfall shower head, handheld shower, and body jets designed to deliver water at different heights for a full-body shower experience.
What is a standard shower system?
A standard shower system usually includes a shower valve, a shower head, and a control handle used to adjust water temperature and flow. These systems are commonly installed in residential bathrooms and are designed to provide reliable water pressure and temperature control for everyday use.
I don’t want to change my plumbing. What kind of shower system should I choose?
If you prefer not to modify your plumbing, it is best to choose a shower system that is compatible with your existing valve configuration. Many standard shower systems are designed to connect directly to existing plumbing lines, making installation simpler and reducing the need for major renovations.
What is the difference between a standard shower system and a thermostatic shower system?
The main difference between a standard shower system and a thermostatic shower system is how they control water temperature and respond to changes in water pressure.
A standard shower system, often called a pressure-balance shower system, adjusts the flow of hot and cold water based on pressure. If the water pressure suddenly changes—such as when a toilet is flushed or another faucet is turned on—the valve balances the pressure to prevent sudden temperature spikes. However, this can sometimes reduce the water flow and may still cause slight temperature fluctuations.
A thermostatic shower system uses a thermostatic valve that automatically mixes hot and cold water to maintain a precise and constant water temperature throughout the entire shower. Even if water pressure changes elsewhere in the home, the thermostatic valve quickly adjusts the water mix to keep the temperature stable.

MAX Faucets offers both standard shower systems and advanced thermostatic rainfall shower systems, designed to provide reliable performance, modern design, and a comfortable shower experience for contemporary bathrooms.
How long does a pressure-balancing shower valve last?
A pressure-balancing shower valve typically lasts 10 to 15 years, depending on water quality, usage, and maintenance. These valves are designed to regulate the pressure between hot and cold water to help maintain a stable shower temperature.
High-quality shower valves are usually made from durable materials such as solid brass bodies and ceramic cartridges, which are built to withstand daily use and high water pressure. In areas with hard water, mineral buildup may affect performance over time, but replacing the internal cartridge can often restore proper operation.
MAX Faucets standard shower systems are designed with durable components that provide reliable temperature balance and long-lasting performance in modern bathrooms.
Why does my shower temperature change when someone uses water in the house?
Shower temperature may change when another fixture in the home uses water because the water pressure between hot and cold lines changes. For example, flushing a toilet or turning on a faucet can reduce pressure in one water line.
A pressure-balancing shower valve helps reduce sudden temperature changes by adjusting the water flow between hot and cold water supplies. However, you may still notice a slight change in water pressure when other fixtures are used.
This is normal for standard shower systems and is one reason many homeowners upgrade to thermostatic shower systems for more precise temperature control.
Can a pressure-balance shower valve prevent scalding?
Yes, a pressure-balance shower valve is designed to help prevent sudden temperature spikes that could cause scalding. The valve monitors the pressure of both hot and cold water and automatically adjusts the flow if a pressure change occurs.
For example, if cold water pressure suddenly drops, the valve reduces the hot water flow to prevent the shower from becoming too hot. This safety feature helps provide a more comfortable and safer shower experience.
Pressure-balance valves are commonly used in standard shower systems and are an important safety feature in many residential bathrooms.
Do standard shower systems work with rainfall shower heads?
Yes, standard shower systems can work with rainfall shower heads as long as the water pressure in the home is sufficient. Rainfall shower heads are designed to provide wider water coverage and a gentle rainfall effect.
When installing a rainfall shower head with a standard shower system, it is important to choose a size that works well with your home’s water pressure. Medium-sized rainfall shower heads often provide the best balance between coverage and water flow.
Many homeowners choose rainfall shower heads to upgrade the look and comfort of a standard shower system while maintaining a simple installation.
Can I upgrade from a standard shower system to a thermostatic shower system?
Yes, it is possible to upgrade from a standard shower system to a thermostatic shower system. However, the upgrade may require replacing the existing shower valve inside the wall because thermostatic valves use a different mechanism to control water temperature.
A thermostatic shower system provides more precise temperature control and can support multiple shower functions such as rainfall shower heads, handheld showers, and body jets operating at the same time.
When upgrading a shower system, it is recommended to consult a plumber to ensure the new valve is compatible with your plumbing configuration.
What water pressure is needed for a standard shower system?
Most standard shower systems operate best with residential water pressure between 40 and 60 PSI. This pressure range provides consistent water flow while allowing the pressure-balancing valve to regulate hot and cold water effectively.
If the water pressure in the home is lower than recommended, the shower may produce weaker water flow. Higher pressure may require the installation of pressure regulators to maintain safe operation.
MAX Faucets standard shower systems are designed to perform reliably with typical household water pressure, providing a comfortable and balanced shower experience for everyday use.
Why is my shower losing water pressure?
Low water pressure in a shower can be caused by several factors, including mineral buildup in the shower head, partially closed water valves, or issues with the home’s plumbing system. Over time, hard water minerals can accumulate inside the shower head or valve components and restrict water flow.
Cleaning the shower head or checking the water supply valves can often improve the water pressure. If the issue continues, the internal cartridge or pressure-balancing valve may need to be inspected or replaced.
MAX Faucets shower systems are designed to provide consistent water flow when installed with proper residential water pressure.
Why is my shower handle difficult to turn?
A shower handle may become difficult to turn due to mineral buildup, worn internal components, or lack of lubrication inside the valve cartridge. Over time, hard water deposits can affect the movement of internal parts.
Cleaning or replacing the cartridge usually restores smooth operation. If the handle becomes extremely stiff or difficult to adjust, the internal valve may require maintenance.
Proper installation and occasional servicing help extend the lifespan of standard shower systems and maintain comfortable temperature control.

Is there an adjustment that I can make to my faucet to increase or decrease the flow of the water?
This act mandated that all newly manufactured faucets must be manufactured with a flow restrictor,
which limits the water flow to 2.2 gallons per minute, If you have an older model faucet, it may
not have a flow restrictor, but you can purchase one and install it yourself. Additionally, some
newer faucets have a built-in feature that allows you to adjust the flow rate.
To do this, simply turn the knob on the side of the faucet to increase or decrease the flow of water.
This law placed strict regulations on flow rates.
All manufacturers must adhere to these standards and no adjustments can be made. In some cases, you may be receiving less than the maximum allowable water flow rate. Normally, this is due to low water pressure, a blockage in the plumbing or in the faucet, or a faucet malfunction.
If you believe that you are getting less than the maximum allowable water flow rate, you should
contact a plumbing professional to inspect your faucet and identify any potential issues.
The professional may be able to replace any faulty parts, clear any blockages, or adjust the water pressure.
If the cause of the reduced water flow rate is due to the Energy Policy Act, then unfortunately,
no adjustments can be made to increase the flow rate,

materials can get caught in aerators and showerheads. Occasionally, a chip might damage the
valve seat that provides the watertight seal. The tips below will help you avoid problems.

Why do I have pin holes in my spout?
These pinholes are likely the result of mineral deposits that have built up in the spout over
time, To clean the pinholes, you can try soaking the spout in vinegar or a solution of
water and baking soda. You can also use a toothpick or a cotton swab to remove any
stubborn deposits. If the problem persists, you may need to replace the spout.
Pin holes in a MAX faucet spout are usually caused by dezincification, which is the
process of zinc coating the spout wearing away
Dezincification can be prevented by regularly cleaning the spout with a vinegar and
water solution to remove mineral deposits and rinse away any debris.
If you have a brass finish spout, a mild brass cleaner can be used to help keep the finish
looking new, removal of zinc from the brass due to salt solutions, brackish water, mildly
acidic solutions and poorly grounded plumbing systems. When the zinc is removed, the copper is redeposited to these areas and the surface of the part.
This process of dezincification can be accelerated by the presence of chlorine in the
water supply, so it is important to make sure your water is filtered properly before it enters
your home, Additionally, it is important to check the spout regularly to make sure there is
no corrosion occurring.
If the spout begins to corrode or if pinholes appear, it is important to replace the spout as
soon as possible to prevent further damage.
The redeposited copper is a weak mass that is porous and fragile.
If this has happened, you will need to replace the spout.

Make sure to read and follow the instructions carefully when using these materials,
Yes. plastic PVC (Polyvinyl-Chloride) tubing can be joined to copper using "grip fittings"
Each side of a grip fitting contains a narrow grip ring and a plastic compression ring
(or rubber O-ring) that forms the seal.
Tips:
Use penetrating oil to help loosen corroded mounting nuts.
Use a hacksaw for cutting steel or plastic pipe.
Use a basin wrench for those hard to reach areas.
Use a tubing cutter to make straight, smooth cuts in plastic and copper tubing.
Wrap thread seal tape clockwise around threaded joints to ensure a tight seal.
Apply the thread seal tape generously and evenly around the threads, making sure
there are no gaps. For additional protection against leaks, use pipe dope or Teflon
paste on the threads before attaching the fitting. When tightening the nut, make sure
to turn it slowly and evenly to avoid any damage to the threads. Once the nut is
securely fastened, check the seal for any signs of leakage. If a leak is detected,
simply tighten the nut a bit more and recheck.
